I'm trying to unite community college students across the country in one community so we can share advice, give support, and talk about community colleges in general. Please join commcolleges if you'd like!

(My apologies if this is not permitted. Since it's so related to the community's topic, I figured it would be fine.)

A Community for Ohio-Area theater and film artists

This community is to be used as a resource for theater & film artists in the Ohio area.

We welcome theater & film artists of all kinds: actors, writers, directors, designers, etc.

We also welcome artists from other mediums (visual artists, dancers, etc.) and people with services to offer Ohio-area theater artists (headshots, classes, etc.).

This site should be used to express need for help with projects you are working on (you need a stage manager, you're holding audtions, etc). It can also be used to post information about auditions/calls for submissions/opportunities in the Ohio area, or to inform others about upcoming theater/film/art events.

Many people would say it's silly or stupid to try and create theater and film in a place like Ohio.  But maybe you're too young to leave this place, or maybe you're too old to leave this place.  Maybe you're going to school here.  Maybe you have a regular, full-time job but still want to pursue theater as a part-time passion.  Maybe you just graduated from theater school and you're sticking around your home area for a few years to save money/build your resume before moving to a big city.  Or maybe you've just decided that you don't want to be one of the 2 billion masses washing up on NY or LA's shores saying "Look at me, I'm an actor/writer/director!" and you've decided that the place doesn't matter and you're going to create awesome theater and film right where you are, dammit.....

Either way.  Join ohiotheater .  Get word out about your stuff.  Get word from others.  Let's help each other out!

Freaks for a Cure
Freaks for a Cure

We are sending out a call for Northwest Ohio Freaks of all shapes and colors to participate in a Walk and fund-raiser for Multiple Sclerosis research. The walk will be held at the University of Toledo Health Education Building on Sunday, April 10th, from 8 am - 1 pm. Most teams for the Walk make team t-shirts and the like. We'd like to try something different. Imagine a flock of people, all dressed in whatever you'd like. Goths with Gamers, Cosplayers with Rocky Horror fans. All in costumes or whatever odd clothing you desire. Something colorful. Something that brings a sense of fun into a serious event. With enough support, we could gather a TON of attention to this illness, and work together to help find a cure. If you can participate, we ask you to join us in this event. If you cannot be there, we ask you to contribute what you can, even if it's just a few dollars. 100% of proceeds will be given to the National Multiple Sclerosos Society. This is not for anyone's profit except the Society. We are going to work hard at gathering enough publicity to get the local news and media to take notice. This is a gress roots effort. PLEASE spread the word!

A few tips for those who are goign to Walk
* Yes, dress outlandishly, but remember.. there ARE going to be kids there, so please.. no duct-tape bikinis, see-through lingeree or the like.
* You WILL be walking. So be sure your footwear is such that it will not eat your feet. Stilleto heels are probably not a good idea (Unless you're a masochist, then have fun with it!)
* Along the same lines, it will be April, and we all know how unpredictable Ohio weather is. Be prepared for chilly weather or heat. Check the weather the night before the walk, and dress accordingly.

A few tips for those who cannot Walk
* Find one of the peole who will be walking, and give your donation to them to bring to the walk. Do NOT mail them. We want to drop off ALL donations on the day of the Walk by hand.
* Even if you cannot donate much, even 5 dollars (the cost of a pack of cloves or a couple of Red Bulls) can help.

The Team will be called Freaks for a Cure. This team is for a cause. Please leave all dramas at the door. I hope everybody that can participate is adult enough to, no matter what they think of another team member, see the greater issue and do what they can to help.

We will be posting more information as it becomes available. Even if contributing a donation is not do-able for you this year, please come out and Walk. We need all the help we can get to help eradicate this disease. And sometimes.. the Normals just aren't enough.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Freaks for a Cure

STRIKE AT OWENS!!! [22 Sep 2004|10:06pm]
E-mail from the administration to students:

From: Owens Pipeline <pipeline@owens.edu>
To: undisclosed-recipients
Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 14:58:39 -0400 (EDT)
Subject: ATTN: All Owens Students

September 22, 2004

Dear Owens Student:

You may already be aware that we at Owens Community College are working
with the Owens faculty to rewrite the current faculty contract.  This
is a process that takes place every three years and, as always, our
goal is to keep the focus on you, your educational experience, and your
career goals.

The Faculty at Owens are the best.  They are professionals.  Their
first concern is you, and they will be with you, in the classroom, as
we work together to rewrite their contract.

You need to know that any discussions about a strike are premature.
State law does not permit a strike at this time, and we are confident
that together we will reach a positive resolution.

We are glad you are here, and we will keep you informed.

William Ivoska, Ph.D.
Vice President
Student Services

"State law does not permit a strike at this time" -- No, but the faculty have gone to a fact-finder, and that's a precursor to a strike.  I looked it up in the Ohio Revised Code, and I profess to not being a lawyer.  However, when the report comes back from the fact-finder, I think they can strike then or they have some sort of mandatory negotiation period or time limit.

Owens administrators have received pay and benefits increases including $500/month car allowances, $1000+ retirement or other benefit contributions, and in several cases, pay increases of over 4%, some of them happening twice or three times within a 12-month period.  The last time I tried to get information out of the administration, they attempted to tell me I could not have it, which is a clear violation of Ohio's sunshine law since such is discussed in public by the Board of Trustees, and the Trustees are appointed by the governor since Owens is a state community college.

If you hear any information concerning faculty contract negotiations or what would happen during a strike, I urge you to leave a comment or contact the media.  We students are the ones getting the short end of the stick, no matter what happens.

To all students, parents of students, or potential students of Owens Community College:

On April 6th, the Board of Trustees of Owens will have their regular public meeting at approximately 1pm on the second floor of Administration Hall.

If you are dissatisfied with something at Owens, such as parking, classroom conditions, tuition increases, things reported in the media (such as faculty contract negotiations), and the like, please consider attending. There will be a public comment session near the end of the meeting.

I myself intend to make a special address to the Board concerning conditions at the college. The only way things will change for students there is if students take an active role and speak up about what's going on. If you have anything to say about the college, and you don't feel like doing it publically, I am willing to voice your concerns for you.

Please leave comments below or IM/email me (see my userinfo page).

Administration screws the faculty over [21 Mar 2004|11:20am]
The Blade talks about contract renegotiation time at Owens

The last contract expired Feb. 16. Bargaining sessions began about two weeks before that.

Tensions date back a lot further - many point to when the Owens Faculty Association was formed in 1989 and later when faculty gave then-President Dan Brown a vote of no confidence. Faculty members say they hoped things would change when the college hired a new president, Dr. Christa Adams, 2 1/2 years ago.

"There were great expectations when Dr. Adams came in. Now we're not so sure," said Arleen Hoag, an economics professor who has been at the college since 1973.

The contract's expired? STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE!

Dr. Adams said that among the faculty she has met with, "morale is high."

Ms. Russell and others point to problems with communication and administrative increases, both in the number of positions and in pay, that have widened the gulf with faculty.

I'd have pretty good morale if I thought she was digging a hole for herself, too.

The college president contends the administration has gone out of its way to add opportunities for faculty involvement.

A host of committees have faculty members, Dr. Adams said, and she occasionally blocks out time for sessions when anyone can talk to her. Last week, she made a round of meetings with departments.

"The most important part of communication is that we do it," Dr. Adams said.

Some faculty, however, suggest a culture of fear is developing that keeps people from speaking up. They point to two staff members who made negative comments about administrative pay raises during a September town hall meeting - both eventually were moved to other positions.

Derm Forde, one of the few people with the balls to say something, got shuffled around.

In August, the board of trustees, happy with Dr. Adams' performance, approved a $25,500 increase in perks for her.

Her salary remained unchanged at $189,280, about $46,000 above the state average for community college presidents, according to the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.

Three other top administrators received raises ranging from 3.8 percent to 7.4 percent and additional perks.

"I think everyone was pretty amazed by all the raises that administrators got last summer," said Anne Bullerjahn, an Owens professor of math and science.

The average full-time faculty member at Owens is paid $46,000, about the state average for community colleges, the association reported.

Not too long after the 13 Action News I-Team was out there, as I recall. Not that I'd know what the Board of Trustees was smoking -- they apparently "commended me on my initiative" or something like that. First time I heard of it was when I got around to reading the minutes of the meeting.

Questions for fellow Owens students:

Are you having any problems with your classes, instructors, or the administration?

Do you feel that your interests and needs aren't being represented by Student Government?

Do you feel that the actions of the administration are not benefiting students? Things like moving all the class cancel/room change notices from paper by the doors to Pipeline? Things like changing the entire student code of conduct without a drop of input from us students?

Have you had paperwork lost or been misdirected in handling something?

I want to hear your complaints because I'm ready to take some issues public, because the college isn't responding to the needs of the students.

Drop your comments below or send me an IM (see my userinfo page).

Thank you.

Hi, I'm new. And, er, yes. I just had my first day of classes today. I wish I had been more thoughtful with my scheduling, unless I can find something to do with the 4 hours between my classes on Monday.

Nice weather today, I thought.
